How do you calculate square footage?

Multiply length by width in feet. A room 12 ft 6 in by 10 ft is 12.5 × 10 = 125 square feet. For measurements in inches, multiply them and divide by 144. Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add the areas together.

How to calculate square footage

  1. Choose the shape

Rectangle, triangle, circle or L-shape (two rectangles).

  2. Choose how you measured

Feet and inches, inches, metres or centimetres.

  3. Enter the measurements

The area appears in square feet, with square yards, square metres and square inches underneath.

  4. Add areas together

Press Add this area to the total for each room or section; the total is shown in square feet, square yards and square metres, and any entry can be removed.

Examples

  • Rectangle 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft125 sq ft (13.89 sq yd, 11.61 m²)
  • Rectangle 48 in × 30 in10 sq ft (1,440 sq in)

    Square inches ÷ 144.

  • L-shape 12 × 10 ft plus 6 × 4 ft144 sq ft (16 sq yd)

Two rectangles that do not overlap.

Key features of the Square Footage Calculator

  • Rectangles, triangles, circles and L-shapes
  • Feet and inches, inches, metres or centimetres
  • Results in square feet, square yards, square metres and square inches
  • Running total of several areas, with individual entries removable
  • Cubic feet to square feet from a volume and a height

When should you use this?

  • Measuring a room before buying flooring, carpet or paint.
  • Adding up several rooms for a floor plan or quote.
  • Working out the area of a circular patio or a triangular garden bed.

Limitations

  • Shapes are idealised. Walls that are not square, bay windows and curved edges need to be split into simpler shapes or measured more closely.
  • It gives the exact area with no allowance for cutting waste, which most flooring and tiling jobs need.
  • The running total is kept only while the page is open; reloading the page clears it.

Troubleshooting

No area appears

Every measurement for the shape needs a value of zero or more. In Feet and inches, one of the two boxes may be left empty.

Add this area to the total is greyed out

It is only available once the current shape has a valid area.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding inches as decimals of a foot: 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, not 12.6 ft. Use the separate Inches box.
  • Measuring the sloping side of a triangle instead of its height at right angles to the base.
  • Overlapping the two rectangles of an L-shape, which counts the corner twice.

Pro tips

Tips for better results

  • Measuring

Measure each wall twice; rooms are rarely square

Measure each wall twice at different heights; rooms are rarely perfectly square, and the larger figure is the safer one for buying material.

  • Odd shapes

Sketch the room and split it into simple shapes

Sketch odd-shaped rooms first and split them into rectangles and triangles, then add each part to the total.

  • Buying

Add the manufacturer's waste allowance and round up

Buy flooring by the area plus the waste allowance the manufacturer recommends, and round up to whole packs.

How to calculate square footage

For a rectangle, multiply length by width in feet. Convert any inches to feet first by dividing by 12: a room 12 ft 6 in by 10 ft is 12.5 × 10 = 125 square feet. A triangle is base × height ÷ 2, where the height is measured at right angles to the base. A circle is π × radius², or π × (diameter ÷ 2)². An L-shaped room is two rectangles that do not overlap, added together.

How to convert inches to square feet

Multiply the two measurements in inches to get square inches, then divide by 144, because a square foot is 12 × 12 inches. A 48 × 30 inch panel is 1,440 square inches, or 10 square feet. Choose Inches as the unit and the calculator does both steps.

Cubic feet to square feet

Cubic feet measure volume and square feet measure area, so one cannot be converted to the other on its own. If you know the height or depth, divide: square feet = cubic feet ÷ height in feet. A space of 800 cubic feet with an 8 ft ceiling has 100 square feet of floor. The Cubic feet to square feet panel in the calculator works this out.

Square yards and square metres

A square yard is 9 square feet, and a square metre is about 10.764 square feet (the foot is exactly 0.3048 m). Carpet and turf are often sold by the square yard and flooring outside the US by the square metre, so every result is shown in all three.

Square Footage Calculator — questions

How do I convert inches to square feet?

Multiply length by width in inches and divide by 144. For example, 24 × 36 inches is 864 square inches, or 6 square feet.

Can I convert cubic feet to square feet?

Only with a height or depth. Divide the cubic feet by the height in feet: 800 cubic feet at 8 feet high is 100 square feet.

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles that do not overlap, measure each, and choose L-shape: the calculator adds them. For more complex rooms, work out each rectangle and use Add this area to the total.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

Nine, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 = 9. A square metre is about 10.76 square feet.

Should I add extra for flooring?

The calculator gives the exact area. Flooring is usually bought with an allowance for cuts and waste — check the fitting instructions for the material — so add that on top.
