How many square feet are in a square metre?

About 10.764 — which is 3.2808 squared. Area is a squared quantity, so you cannot apply a length conversion factor to it directly; that mistake makes results wrong by a factor of roughly three.

How to convert square feet to square metres

  1. Enter the value

Type the number into the Value box; the result updates as you type.

  2. Choose the units

Pick From and To — square metres and square feet to begin with, or hectares, acres or square miles. The swap button between them flips the direction.

  3. Read every unit at once

The All units table below the result shows the value in every area unit, from square millimetres to square miles.

Examples

  • 1 acre4,046.86 m² · 0.4047 hectares

Still the standard unit for land in several countries.

  • 100 m²1,076.4 sq ft

A typical flat, in the two systems property is advertised in.

Key features of the Area Converter

When should you use this?

  • Converting a property listing between square metres and square feet.
  • Reading a land measurement given in acres or hectares.
  • Working out how much flooring or paint a room needs.

Limitations

  • Conversions go through a base unit, so a value converted from one unit to another and back can differ in the last decimal place. That is floating-point arithmetic, not a defect, and it is far below the precision of any real measurement.
  • Results are displayed rounded for readability. If you need a specific number of significant figures, round the displayed value yourself rather than assuming the display is exact.
  • Converting a measurement cannot make it more precise than it was. A length measured to the nearest centimetre is still that precise after conversion, however many decimal places appear.
  • Area scales as the square of length. Doubling a room's dimensions quadruples its area, which is why converting a length factor directly gives a badly wrong answer.

Troubleshooting

The answer disagrees with another converter

Usually a different definition of the same unit name — US versus imperial, or a short versus a long ton. Check which variant each tool means before assuming one is wrong.

The last decimal place changes on a round trip

Conversion factors are not exact in binary floating point. The error is around one part in ten thousand billion, which no physical measurement can detect.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a unit name is unambiguous. It very often is not.
  • Rounding partway through a multi-step calculation instead of at the end.
  • Using the length conversion factor for an area. It gives an answer roughly ten times too small for metres to feet.

Pro tips

Tips for better results

  • US and UK units

The same unit name can mean two amounts

Check which system a unit belongs to before trusting it. Several unit names mean different amounts in the US and the UK.

  • Working method

Write the unit beside every number

Carry the unit through your working rather than converting at the end. Most unit errors happen when a number is written down without one.

  • Scaling

Square the length factor to get the area factor

To convert an area factor from a length factor, square it. A metre is 3.28 feet, so a square metre is 3.28² ≈ 10.76 square feet.

Area scales as the square

The most common area mistake is applying a length conversion directly. A metre is 3.28 feet, but a square metre is 10.76 square feet — 3.28 squared. Doubling the sides of a square quadruples its area, and the same applies to unit conversion.

Land units

Hectare — 10,000 m², a square 100 m on a side. The metric standard for land.

Acre — 4,046.86 m², about 0.405 hectares. Historically the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day, which is why it is not a round number of anything. It is defined as one chain by one furlong (66 ft × 660 ft), so an acre is a long thin rectangle by origin rather than a square.

A useful rule of thumb: a hectare is about two and a half acres, and a football pitch is roughly one hectare.

Privacy

The Area Converter runs entirely in your browser. What you enter and the result it produces stay on your own device — nothing is sent anywhere, because nothing needs to be.

You can confirm this rather than take our word for it: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and use the tool. No request carries your input. It also keeps working with the connection off.

Area Converter — questions

How many square feet are in a square metre?

About 10.764. Note this is 3.2808 squared — you cannot apply a length conversion directly to an area.

How many acres are in a hectare?

About 2.471. A hectare is 10,000 m², a square 100 metres on a side.

Why is an acre such an odd number?

It comes from medieval ploughing: one chain by one furlong, the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day. That makes it 4,046.86 m² and a long rectangle rather than a square.

Why can I not just convert the length units?

Because area is a squared quantity. Converting metres to feet uses a factor of 3.2808; converting square metres to square feet uses that factor squared, 10.764.
